What to wear for your beach engagement photos

TOP TIPS

Engagements

You’ve booked your beach engagement session โ€” how exciting! ๐Ÿฅฐ Now comes one of the questions I get asked most often: *”Justyna, what do we actually wear?”*

I completely understand the overwhelm. You want to look beautiful, feel like yourselves, and have outfits that photograph well โ€” all at the same time. The beach adds its own layer of things to consider too: the wind, the light, the sand, the movement.

So here is your complete guide to dressing for your beach engagement photos โ€” written from the heart, as your photographer who genuinely wants you to feel as stunning as you are. ๐Ÿ’•

## First โ€” A Little Reassurance

Before we even talk outfits, I want you to know this: the most beautiful engagement photos I’ve ever taken have never been about what someone was wearing. They’ve been about the way he looked at her. The way she laughed. The way they held each other like nobody else existed.

Your outfits are the frame โ€” your love is the painting. So wear something that makes you feel *good*, and trust the rest to the light, the sea, and the moment. ๐ŸŒฟ

## The Golden Rule โ€” Soft, Neutral, Timeless

The beach is already a naturally beautiful, atmospheric backdrop. You want your outfits to complement it, not compete with it.

Think soft. Think warm. Think timeless.

**Colours that photograph beautifully at the beach:**
– Warm whites and creams
– Soft beiges and sand tones
– Dusty blush and warm terracotta
– Sage green and soft olive
– Warm caramel and tan
– Muted navy (not bright)

**Colours to avoid:**
– Neon or very bright colours
– Harsh black (unless styled softly)
– Busy patterns or logos
– Very dark colours that absorb the warm golden light

## For Her ๐ŸŒธ

The beach is one of the most romantic settings for a flowing dress or skirt โ€” and I absolutely love photographing movement. The wind does something magical to fabric, and those windswept moments are some of my absolute favourites to capture.

**My favourite outfit ideas for her:**

**1. A flowing maxi dress**
Think linen, chiffon, or soft cotton in a warm neutral. Something that moves with the breeze. A cream or dusty blush maxi dress at golden hour on a Sussex beach is honestly one of the most cinematic things you’ll ever see in photographs. โœจ

**2. A midi dress with texture**
Linen, broderie anglaise, or a soft floral in muted tones. Something that feels elegant but effortless โ€” like you could have worn it on the most beautiful date of your life.

**3. A matching co-ord set**
Wide leg linen trousers and a soft top in matching tones. Understated, quietly luxurious, and so beautifully timeless in photographs.

**4. A relaxed shirt dress**
Unbuttoned slightly, belted loosely, in a warm linen or chambray. Effortless, romantic, and so natural-looking in photographs.

**Footwear:**
Barefoot is honestly my favourite for beach sessions โ€” it immediately relaxes people and looks so natural and free. But if you prefer shoes, bring simple sandals or espadrilles. Avoid heels โ€” you’ll be walking on sand and pebbles! ๐Ÿ˜„

**Hair:**
Loose, natural and relaxed always photographs most beautifully at the beach. Let the wind do its thing โ€” those natural, windswept moments are pure magic in photographs. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

## For Him ๐ŸŒฟ

I always encourage the men in my sessions to dress in a way that feels genuinely comfortable โ€” because that comfort comes through in every single photo.

**My favourite outfit ideas for him:**

**1. Linen shirt + chinos or linen trousers**
This is my absolute favourite combination for beach sessions. A soft white, cream, or muted blue linen shirt left slightly open, with well-fitted chinos or linen trousers in a complementary neutral tone. Rolled sleeves, relaxed energy. Perfection. โœจ

**2. A soft knit or light jumper**
If it’s a cooler evening session (which honestly gives the most incredible golden light), a soft cream or warm grey knit is so beautiful in photographs. Timeless and warm.

**3. A simple t-shirt and well-fitted trousers**
If he’s more casual by nature โ€” keep it simple and well-fitted. A quality plain t-shirt in a neutral tone, with well-fitted trousers or chinos. Simple, elegant, effortlessly him.

**Footwear:**
Like her โ€” bare feet on the beach always looks the most natural and free. Or simple leather sandals, loafers, or clean white trainers if he prefers.

## Coordinating Together โ€” Without Matching ๐Ÿ’•

One of the most common questions I get is: “Should we match?”

My answer is always: coordinate, don’t match.

You want to look like you belong together without looking like you planned it too precisely. Here’s how:

– **Choose the same colour family** โ€” if she’s in cream and blush, he might wear cream linen and warm beige chinos
– **Match the formality level** โ€” if she’s in a flowing maxi dress, he shouldn’t be in a casual t-shirt
– **Use textures to add interest** โ€” linen, cotton, soft knits all work beautifully together
– **One pop of colour between you** โ€” maybe a soft terracotta or dusty blue that ties your looks together without being too matchy

## The Details That Make the Difference ๐ŸŒธ

Don’t forget the small, meaningful details. These are the things I’ll zoom in on, and they make your photos feel deeply personal and authentically yours.

– **Your engagement ring** โ€” make sure it’s clean and sparkling! It will be photographed a lot ๐Ÿ’
– **Meaningful jewellery** โ€” a necklace he gave you, a bracelet with special significance
– **A personal prop** โ€” a picnic blanket, a bottle of champagne, flowers she loves, a book you both adore
– **Comfortable layers** โ€” a soft linen blazer or a light cardigan for him can look incredible in photos and keep you warm between shots

## What to Bring on the Day

Beyond your outfits, here’s what I always recommend packing for a beach engagement session:

– ๐Ÿ’ง Water โ€” you’ll be surprised how much you need
– ๐Ÿ‘œ A small bag for shoes when you go barefoot
– ๐Ÿ’‹ Lip balm and a small mirror for touch-ups
– ๐ŸŒธ A hairbrush or clip for between shots
– ๐Ÿงด A little dry shampoo if it’s a windy day
– ๐Ÿ“ฑ Your phone is OFF โ€” this time is just for the two of you

## My Honest Advice ๐Ÿฅน

I’ve photographed couples who spent months planning their outfits, and couples who threw something on an hour before their session. And honestly? The most beautiful photos have always come from the couples who arrived relaxed, present, and focused on each other.

So choose something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, coordinate loosely, and then let go of the rest. Trust the golden light. Trust the sea. Trust the process.

Just be yourselves โ€” and let me take care of everything else. โœจ
