If you’ve been dreaming of an elopement that feels like a film — just the two of you, golden light, and a location so beautiful it takes your breath away — Sussex might just be the most perfect place in England to make that happen. 🌿
As a romantic, cinematic elopement photographer based in Sussex and Brighton, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love stories in some of the most breathtaking corners of this county. And I want to let you in on a little secret: Sussex is wildly, quietly magical for elopements.
Whether you’re drawn to windswept clifftops, ancient woodland, golden beach pebbles or rolling countryside as far as the eye can see — Sussex has a location that will make your elopement feel completely and utterly *yours*.
Here are my favourite romantic elopement locations in Sussex, and why each one is so special. 💕
## 1. The South Downs National Park
There is something about the South Downs that feels timeless. Rolling chalk hills, vast open skies, wildflowers swaying in the breeze — it’s the kind of landscape that makes you feel completely present and completely free.
The South Downs is perfect for couples who want their elopement to feel expansive and cinematic. At golden hour, the light here is unlike anywhere else — warm, soft, and utterly dreamlike. I love shooting here in late afternoon when the shadows grow long and the hills glow amber and gold. ✨
**Best for:** Couples who love wide open spaces, dramatic skies and a quietly luxurious natural backdrop.
**My favourite spots:** Devil’s Dyke, Ditchling Beacon, and the Seven Sisters Country Park.

## 2. Birling Gap & The Seven Sisters Cliffs
If you want drama, romance and the kind of backdrop that looks like it belongs in a film — the Seven Sisters cliffs are calling your name. 🌊
These iconic white chalk cliffs stretching along the East Sussex coastline are one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the whole of England. The contrast of white cliffs, green clifftop grass and deep blue sea is just extraordinary — and at golden hour or during the blue hour just after sunset, the atmosphere here is completely cinematic.
Elopements here feel both intimate and epic at the same time. Just the two of you, the wind in your hair, the whole ocean stretching out behind you. It’s the kind of moment you’ll want frozen in time forever.
**Best for:** Couples who want dramatic, editorial, cinematic imagery with a wild and romantic feel.
**My favourite time to shoot:** Late afternoon into golden hour for the warmest, most magical light.

## 3. Ashdown Forest
For the romantics who dream of ancient woodland, dappled light filtering through trees, and a feeling of being completely hidden from the world — Ashdown Forest is pure magic. 🌿
One of the oldest forests in England, Ashdown Forest has a quiet, almost mystical atmosphere that makes it feel like stepping into another world. In autumn the colours are extraordinary — deep amber, burnt orange, golden yellow. In spring and summer the light through the leaves is soft and dreamy. In winter the bare branches create the most beautiful, moody atmosphere.
This is a location for couples who want their elopement to feel intimate, soulful and completely removed from the noise of everyday life.
**Best for:** Couples who love nature, woodland, golden autumn tones and a quiet, soulful atmosphere.
**My favourite time to shoot:** Autumn for the colours, or early morning in summer for misty, ethereal light.

## 4. Brighton Beach & The Seafront
Brighton holds such a special place in my heart — and it’s one of the most versatile elopement locations in Sussex. 🌅
The iconic pebble beach, the pier stretching out into the sea, the colourful beach huts, the vibrant energy of the city just steps away — Brighton has a personality unlike anywhere else. And yet at golden hour, when the sun sets over the water and the light turns everything warm and golden, it becomes completely romantic and cinematic.
A Brighton elopement can be as intimate or as vibrant as you want it to be. Ceremony on the beach at sunset, followed by a walk along the seafront and dinner at one of Brighton’s incredible restaurants. Simple, meaningful, utterly beautiful.
**Best for:** Couples who love the sea, city energy and golden sunset light.
**My favourite spots:** The quieter end of the beach away from the pier, Hove Lawns for a softer, more elegant feel.

## 5. Cuckmere Haven
Tucked between the South Downs and the Seven Sisters cliffs, Cuckmere Haven is one of Sussex’s most beautiful and peaceful hidden gems. 💕
The meandering river cutting through the valley, the wide open flood plains, the cliffs in the distance and the sea beyond — Cuckmere Haven has a landscape that feels genuinely cinematic. It’s peaceful, unhurried and breathtakingly beautiful in every season.
This is one of my absolute favourite locations for elopement photography because of the variety it offers — you can move between the river, the valley floor, the clifftop and the beach all within a short walk. Every step reveals a new backdrop more beautiful than the last.
**Best for:** Couples who want variety, natural beauty and a location that feels genuinely undiscovered.
**My favourite time to shoot:** Golden hour in summer or early autumn when the light is warm and the valley glows.

## 6. Bodiam Castle
For the couple who has always dreamed of something a little more fairytale — Bodiam Castle in East Sussex is utterly breathtaking. 🏰
This perfectly preserved 14th century moated castle rising out of the English countryside is one of the most romantic and dramatic locations in the whole of Sussex. Reflected in the still water of the moat, surrounded by countryside, it creates the most extraordinary backdrop for an intimate elopement.
Whether you choose to marry in the grounds of the castle or simply use it as your backdrop for portraits, Bodiam creates images that look like they belong in a storybook.
**Best for:** Couples who love history, architecture, drama and a fairytale romantic atmosphere.

## How to Plan Your Sussex Elopement 🌸
Planning an elopement in Sussex doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, that’s one of the most beautiful things about choosing to elope — it can be as simple or as detailed as you want it to be.
Here are a few things to think about:
**Choose your location based on your vibe.** Do you want wild and dramatic? Peaceful and woodland? Coastal and cinematic? Each location in Sussex tells a completely different story — choose the one that feels most like *you*.
**Think about the light.** Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is always my recommendation for the most beautiful, cinematic light. Check the sunset time for your date and plan your ceremony or portraits around it.
**Keep it intimate.** The most emotional, beautiful elopements I’ve photographed have been the ones where couples truly focus on each other — not on performing for an audience. Just the two of you, your vows, and a witness if you need one.
**Work with a photographer who gets it.** Your elopement photographer isn’t just someone pointing a camera. They’re helping you create an experience — guiding you gently, helping you feel at ease, and capturing every real, unscripted moment along the way. 💕
